Leopard Moth

Leopard Moth with yellow droplets.

Giant leopard moths (Hypercompe scribonia ) like many other moths of the Arctiidae family, secrete tiny droplets of yellowish liquid when threatened that serve as a chemical defense. Produced in the glands in their thoraxes, the yellow droplets stick to the moths' sides and leave an unpleasant taste in the mouths of predators.

They have a brilliant blue and orange marked abdomen, but it wasn’t receptive to having its wings coaxed open for a photo.

Maybe next time.
